MySalam Free Takaful: Who Qualifies and How to Claim

Edited by Teh Kim Guan, ACMA, CGMA · Updated 2026-06-24

MySalam is a government-funded takaful scheme that gives B40 Malaysians free protection against 50 critical illnesses and pays RM50 per day when you are hospitalised in a public hospital. If you receive Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR), you are almost certainly already covered, at zero cost to you.

What is MySalam?

MySalam (Skim Perlindungan Masyarakat B40) was launched in 2019 under the Ministry of Finance Malaysia and is administered by Great Eastern Takaful Berhad. The government funds it from a dedicated trust fund, so eligible recipients pay no premiums at all.

The scheme runs until 2026, with the government extending it as the original RM2 billion fund winds down. Claims for the 2025 eligibility year must be submitted by 30 June 2026.

Who qualifies for MySalam?

Eligibility is tied directly to the STR (Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah) programme. If you are an active STR recipient, you are automatically enrolled. There is no separate application form.

Core eligibility criteria:

CriterionRequirement
CitizenshipMalaysian citizen
Age18 to 65 years old
STR statusActive recipient in the current cycle
Spouse coverageSpouse of an STR recipient (if also STR-registered)
Household incomeB40 bracket (gross monthly household income below RM5,000, per LHDN database)

Enrollment is automatic. LHDN cross-references the STR database with national identity records, so you do not need to register with MySalam separately. You can verify your coverage status at mysalam.com.my using your MyKad number.

Single adults (bujang)

Single STR recipients aged 21 to 65 are also eligible for MySalam coverage. Individuals aged 18 to 20 under the STR household category may be covered depending on their household registration.

What does MySalam cover?

MySalam provides two distinct benefits.

1. Critical Illness Benefit: RM8,000 lump sum

If you are diagnosed with any of the 50 covered critical illnesses, you receive a one-time cash payment of RM8,000. This payment is designed to help with lost income and immediate costs, not to cover medical bills directly.

MySalam is notably the first takaful scheme in Malaysia to cover rare diseases as part of its critical illness list (expanded from 45 to 50 illnesses in the 2024 update by Great Eastern Takaful).

Selected illnesses from the 50 covered (grouped by category):

CategoryExamples
CancerAll invasive cancers (excluding early-stage)
HeartHeart attack, coronary artery surgery, heart valve surgery
Brain and nervous systemStroke resulting in permanent deficit, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease
KidneysKidney failure requiring dialysis
OrgansMajor organ transplant (heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas)
LimbsMajor limb amputation
Blindness and hearingComplete and permanent loss of sight or hearing
Rare diseasesSpecified rare diseases (added 2024, see full list at mysalam.com.my)

For the complete, authoritative list of all 50 conditions, visit the official page at mysalam.com.my/mys/info/?url=ci.

2. Hospitalisation Cash Benefit: RM50 per day

If you are admitted to a government hospital, university hospital, or military hospital in Malaysia, MySalam pays RM50 per day, up to a maximum of 14 days per year (RM700 per year maximum).

This benefit applies to general hospitalisation, not only critical illnesses.

Important limitations:

  • Private hospitals are not covered. You must be admitted to a public or university facility.
  • You claim this benefit after discharge, not during admission.
  • The RM50/day and RM8,000 critical illness payout are separate benefits. You can claim both in the same year if you are hospitalised and also diagnosed with a covered illness.

How to claim MySalam step by step

All claims are submitted online through the MySalam portal. There is no paper-based submission channel.

Step 1: Log in to the MySalam portal

Go to mysalam.com.my and log in using your MyKad number and the registered mobile phone number or email address linked to your STR account.

If you have never logged in before, click “Daftar” or “Register” and complete the one-time account setup using your MyKad and phone number.

Step 2: Verify your coverage status

On the dashboard, confirm that your coverage is active for the relevant year. If your status shows as inactive but you believe you are eligible, contact the MySalam helpline or visit the nearest STR service counter.

Step 3: Navigate to Claims Submission

Click the “Claims” icon on the dashboard and select “Claims Submission.” Choose the benefit type: Hospitalisation Benefit or Critical Illness Benefit.

Step 4: Gather required documents

For Hospitalisation Benefit:

  • Copy of your MyKad (front and back)
  • Hospital discharge note (Nota Discaj) from the public hospital

For Critical Illness Benefit:

  • Copy of your MyKad
  • Completed “Doctor’s Statement” form: download the correct form for your specific illness category from the MySalam portal, then ask your attending specialist to complete and sign it
  • Supporting medical report or diagnosis letter from the treating doctor or hospital

Step 5: Upload documents and submit

Upload clear scans or photos of all required documents through the portal. Double-check that the doctor’s statement is fully completed, signed, and stamped, as incomplete forms are the most common reason for rejection.

After submission, you will receive a reference number. Track your claim status through the same portal dashboard.

Step 6: Receive payment

Approved payouts are transferred to the bank account registered under your STR profile. There is no cheque option. Ensure your bank account details in the LHDN/STR database are current before submitting.

Claims deadline

Eligibility yearClaim submission deadline
202530 June 2026
202630 June 2027 (anticipated)

Do not wait. Submitting close to the deadline risks rejection if documents need resubmission.

Common reasons claims are rejected

  • Doctor’s Statement form is unsigned, incomplete, or uses the wrong template for the illness
  • Hospital was a private facility (not covered)
  • Diagnosis does not match the exact illness definition in the MySalam schedule
  • Bank account details in the STR database are outdated or belong to a closed account
  • Claim submitted after the annual deadline

If your claim is rejected, you can appeal through the MySalam portal within 30 days of the rejection notice.

MySalam vs other health protection schemes

MySalam is not your only safety net. Understanding how it stacks with other programmes helps you avoid gaps.

SchemeWho covers itBenefitRequires employment?
MySalamGovernment (B40 only)RM8,000 CI payout + RM50/day hospital cashNo
SOCSO (EIS/Employment Injury)Employer and employee contributionsMedical and income replacement for work injuriesYes
BPJS / PerkesoPerkesoOccupational disease and injury coverageYes
Private medical cardIndividual / employerFull hospitalisation and surgical billsNo, but costs money

MySalam covers the self-employed, gig workers, retirees, and homemakers in B40 households, groups that often fall outside employer-based schemes. It is the minimum floor, not a substitute for a full medical card when one is affordable.

Key takeaways

  • MySalam is free for all active B40 STR recipients aged 18 to 65. No application needed.
  • It covers 50 critical illnesses with a one-time RM8,000 lump-sum payout.
  • Hospitalisation in a public or university hospital pays RM50 per day, up to RM700 per year.
  • Claims are submitted entirely online at mysalam.com.my using your MyKad number.
  • The 2025 eligibility year claim deadline is 30 June 2026. Submit early.
  • Rejected claims can be appealed within 30 days. The most common fix is completing the doctor’s statement correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to apply for MySalam separately from STR?

No. If you are an active STR recipient aged 18 to 65, you are automatically enrolled. Log in to mysalam.com.my with your MyKad to confirm your status.

What happens if I am diagnosed with cancer but also admitted to hospital for treatment?

You can claim both benefits. The RM8,000 critical illness payment and the RM50/day hospitalisation cash are separate benefits and are not mutually exclusive in the same year.

Can I claim MySalam if I am treated at a private hospital?

The hospitalisation cash benefit (RM50/day) applies only to government, university, and military hospitals. The critical illness payout (RM8,000) is triggered by diagnosis, not the treatment location, so you can claim it regardless of whether you are treated at a private facility.

My MySalam status shows as inactive. What should I do?

Check whether your STR status is active at bantuantunai.hasil.gov.my. MySalam eligibility follows STR. If your STR was suspended or lapsed, resolve that first, then contact the MySalam helpline at 1-300-13-1212 to update your coverage record.

Does MySalam cover my children?

Children listed under an STR household are not directly covered by MySalam. The scheme covers the STR recipient and their registered spouse. Separate government health schemes, including hospital-based programmes and Skim Peduli Kesihatan, cover children in B40 families.
